Lee Mingwei was first introduced to Australian audiences through his letter writing project, "Writing the unspoken" (pictured), that he developed for the Third Asia-Pacific Triennial in 1999. In this work, Lee Mingwei invited visitors to write a letter in one of three specially created booths, while thinking about forgiveness, gratitude or insight. The work proved to be overwhelmingly popular, with more than 20 000 letters written throughout the duration of APT3. The work is now in the Gallery?s Collection and will continue to be enjoyed by many more visitors to the Gallery in the future. Lee Mingwei was
born in Taiwan in 1964. His work has been included in numerous international
exhibitions including the 2000 Taipei Biennale, and he has held solo
exhibitions at The Whitney Museum of American Art and the Cleveland Center for
Contemporary Art. Always an engaging speaker, Lee Mingwei will present an
illustrated lecture about his art and the ideas that inspire and motivate his
practice, and particularly in regards to some recent projects.
Artists from the Asia-Pacific region such as Nam June Paik, Michael Riley and Lisa Reihana are leaders in innovative modes of expression using light, time and motion in place of pencil and paint. This forum will discuss how artists heighten our awareness of sound, space and the duration of time, and invite us to immerse ourselves in the world of the moving image. Panel speakers include: Alessio Cavallaro, Producer/Curator, New Media Projects, Australian Centre for the Moving Image, Melbourne; Deborah Lawler-Dormer, Director, Moving Image Centre, Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand; and Rhana Devenport, Senior Project Officer, APT, Queensland Art Gallery.
