ALCOA GIVES MAJOR BOOST TO NGV NOLAN COLLECTION
Alcoa World Alumina Australia's Managing Director Wayne Osborn today announced the company had given Nolan's four panel Landscape (Salt Lake) 1966 to the NGV.

The four paintings will be on display from 1pm next Thursday, 28 November 2002, after the opening of the Level 2 and 3 galleries at The Ian Potter Centre: NGV Australia, at Federation Square.

Mr Osborn said Alcoa's presentation of Landscape (Salt Lake) was part of the company's on-going contribution to the Australian community and in particular the arts.
"Alcoa has been a part of the Australian community for 40 years and in that time we have formed wonderful partnerships within the arts community ranging from our support of community art projects at a regional level to playing a part in our national art and cultural history," he said.
"This addition to the NGV's collection of one of Australia's most important artists is a further extension of Alcoa's commitment to the arts. I hope that art lovers throughout Australia will take the opportunity to view this extraordinary work which now belongs to them," Mr Osborn said.

NGV Director, Gerard Vaughan said Landscape (Salt Lake) is a major addition to the NGV's collection.

"Landscape (Salt Lake) consists of four large panels and represents Nolan's mature vision of the Wimmera region.
"The National Gallery of Victoria represents Nolan's work magnificently, principally because in 1983 Sir Sidney and Lady Nolan presented to the NGV the great Wimmera series of the 1940's, which immediately preceded the Ned Kelly pictures. Nolan's Footballer of 1946 was also acquired recently.
"This new donation now allows the NGV to represent a later, highly creative phase of Nolan's landscape style. It is a sensational conclusion to our strong representation of Nolan in the inaugural hang at NGV Australia in Federation Square," Dr Vaughan said.

Landscape (Salt Lake) 1966 was lent to the National Gallery of Victoria in 1987 as part of the Sidney Nolan retrospective exhibition and was a highly popular work during the show.
"We are thrilled our Nolan collection has been enhanced by this generous gift from Alcoa World Alumina Australia of the painting for our permanent collection and thank them for their support of the Gallery," Dr Vaughan said.

Landscape (Salt Lake) 1966 is oil on composition board and consists of four panels, each 152.0cm x 122.0cm
