Map of Australia ender ABORIGINAL ART IN BERLIN EXHIBITION

13/10/02

Europe had a sample of Aboriginal art at an exhibition during a trade mission to Berlin on October 13. The exhibition featured 19 sculptures and 17 paintings.

North Queensland artist Rosella Namok and Curator Ron Hurley joined in presenting the exhibition including twelve paintings by artists from the Lockhart River on eastern Cape York Peninsula. Five of the paintings are by Fiona Foley, whose traditional country is the World Heritage listed Fraser Island.

The sculptures - traditional wooden pieces transformed into bronze and aluminium castings in Brisbane - are the work of artists from Aurukun, on the western side of Cape York. The exhibition is part of the indigenous export project within the Queensland government's trade division.

The Queensland Premier, Peter Beattie said...
"I am determined to do everything I can to publicise the work of our indigenous artists and find new markets for them. The German people have a record of appreciation of Australian indigenous art, so Berlin is a promising market for these exciting Queensland sculptures and paintings."
